A lecture on Alexander von Humboldt's writing workshop with Dr. Dominik Erdmann, librarian at the Berlin State Library, Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation.
In his writings, the natural scientist Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) aimed to describe the "whole world in one book". But how did he manage to achieve this?
When writing, Humboldt used an extensive box of notes, the "Kollektaneen zum Kosmos", which have survived to this day. This extraordinary collection of notes offers deep insights into the way he worked and the materials he used to put his world science on paper.
Dr. Dominik Erdmann presents them. As one of the best experts on Humboldt's estate, he has written and edited numerous publications on the scholar, including the book "Totalansichten aus dem Zettelkasten" (Total Views from the Note Box), which was published in 2024 and gives this event its name.
