Live music series at Callie's
Callie's presents The Third Room, a new performance series that opens the institution's sound studio to the public for the first time. A space traditionally reserved for production is transformed into a place of collective listening. The series invites the audience into an intimate environment where sound, process and experimentation can be experienced in real time.
Over twelve evenings, composers Agnese Menguzzato, Hyunhye Angela Seo, Aida Shirazi and Mariam Rezaei will present new and evolving works created during specially curated studio residencies. Each artist will design three consecutive sessions, using the studio as a place of exploration, improvisation and discovery.
A connecting element in the works of these composers is their engagement with instruments they studied at a young age, including the Renaissance lute, the piano, the Iranian santur and turntables. These instruments are reimagined and transformed into contemporary, hybrid sound languages consisting of analogue and electronic elements.
In the tension between technical precision and emotional intensity, the artists negotiate themes such as cultural memory, hybridity and diaspora – areas that have long been located on the margins of so-called ‘serious’ music. Their practice challenges conservatory hierarchies and canonical narratives about who makes experimental music and how.
Each session offers its own configuration of collaborations, techniques and studio equipment – from modular diffusers to spatial interventions. Each evening builds on the previous one while remaining open to chance, error and transformation. The acoustic environment of the sound studio, normally designed for rehearsals and recordings, becomes a central part of the listening experience. The equipment remains visible, the process audible. The absence of stage scenography brings the act of making to the fore and offers a rare insight into research-based compositional methods.
By inviting the audience into this production space, The Third Room redefines the conditions of experiencing artistic work. Visitors encounter not a perfected result, but a living process – a shared space in which the mechanics of sound are revealed and uncertainty becomes productive terrain.
