DANCE IN AUGUST - Programme 2023
A total of 21 productions with around 200 artists from over 25 countries are being shown at 10 venues in Berlin.
In the 34th edition of the renowned festival, the focus is on the influential Swedish-Italian choreographer Cristina Caprioli. Tanz im August is devoting the big retrospective “ONCE OVER TIME” to her, with over 22 works from the past two decades. Among the other highlights are the productions at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele: the opening by Australian company Marrugeku, and works by the Catalan company La Veronal, the Brazilian choreographer Bruno Beltrão and Oona Doherty, from Northern Ireland.
Tanz im August, presented by HAU Hebbel am Ufer, is the festival for contemporary dance in Berlin.
Since 1989, the international festival has presented contemporary dance performances, renowned companies, innovative choreographers, and new aesthetics and formats from around the world. Berlin-based artists present their current works, and German and international dance pieces celebrate their premieres here.
Since 2014, the festival program has been curated by Virve Sutinen from Finland. She brings together different generations of artists and different aesthetic approaches. Her style stands for open-mindedness, participation and experimentation. With encounter and discussion formats, Tanz im August invites the audience to become an active part of the festival and to exchange ideas with the participating artists. Every two years there are also comprehensive retrospectives.
