Songs and Lyrics from German Emigration
What is this experience, exile? Songs and texts recall the many fates of German writers and musicians who had to leave Nazi Germany in search of a new home abroad.
Contributions by Mascha Kaléko, Hans Sahl, Walter Mehring, Werner Richard Heymann, Kurt Weill, and Friedrich Hollaender, among others, suggest that emigration is much more than leaving one place and arriving in another. It also means what happens "in between," between the old and the new world.
