RSB concert broadcast from 26.02.2022 with starry sky projection

Composer Dmitri Smirnov, husband of Yelena Firssova, died of the corona virus in April 2020. Almost twenty years earlier, he had composed a cello concerto for Mstislav Rostropovich, which the cellist of the century, who died in 2007, was unable to perform.

Now, in its premiere by Alban Gerhardt and the RSB, it becomes a double requiem, precisely because musically it has nothing at all of a funeral music. The program is followed by the Cello Concerto No. 2 by Anton Rubinstein, one of those great romantic and yet little-known cello concertos to which soloist Alban Gerhardt has devoted himself in a special way. The concert will conclude with the Symphony No. 5 by Pyotr Tchaikovsky.
