with Kate Crawford and Nadim Samman
Merging research and design, science and art, Calculating Empires is a 24 meter-long map charting how power and technology have been intertwined since 1500. Exhibited as part of Poetics of Encryption, this landmark piece by Kate Crawford and Vladan Joler explores centuries of conflicts, enclosures, and colonizations. The map is presented as a diptych. One half concerns the themes of Communication and Computation. The other half explores Control and Classification.
In this event, Kate Crawford will speak about her own research at the intersection of AI and political theory, the intentions and process behind the Calculating Empires map, and future entanglements between art and technology.
