When Russian troops occupied the Ukrainian Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the early hours of their invasion on February 24, 2022, their activities were documented by surveillance cameras.

They transformed the site into a military base in order to capture the capital, Kyiv, located just a hundred miles away.
Special Operation is based on this video footage from the site of the worst nuclear disaster in history and creates an almost disembodied examination of military logic.
A Q&A will follow the film, moderated by Vasyl Cherepanyn (Kyiv Biennial).

Oleksiy Radynski is a filmmaker and writer based in Kyiv. His films have been screened at the Berlinale, the International Film Festival Rotterdam, and the Oberhausen Short Film Festival, among others, where he received the Grand Prix for his film Chornobyl 22. His writings have appeared in e-flux journal, The Atlantic, and taz – die tageszeitung, among others. Since 2008, he has been involved with the Visual Culture Research Center in Kyiv. Radynski is also a co-founder of the filmmaking collective Kinotron Group.
