The DDR Museum is expanding its commitment to lively, contemporary history education and presenting a new film project: ‘Orte Ost’ (Places East) connects historical and current developments in East German locations, with historian Dr Ilko-Sascha Kowalzcuk guiding viewers through key places of remembrance and future prospects in East Germany. The series will be published every two weeks on the DDR Museum's YouTube channel starting in mid-January 2026.

The series kicks off with a pilot film entitled ‘Oberschöneweide. Silicon Valley of the East’.

The premiere will take place on 13 January 2026 at the Industriesalon Schöneweide. The film sheds light on the history of this important industrial location since the imperial era. It focuses on developments in the GDR, the transformation after 1989/90, and the role of the neighbourhood as a centre of higher education and innovation today.

The production was created with the support of the Industriesalon Schöneweide under the direction of Jana Birthelmer. The historical context is supplemented by interviews with contemporary witnesses such as Susanne Reumschüssel, former director of the Industriesalon, and Matthias Costa, who worked as an engineer at the television electronics factory in Oberschöneweide during the GDR era.
