NAH DRAN is a performance series for Berlin based emerging choreographers. It provides an opportunity to present new pieces, finished or in process. The format assembles 3 pieces by different young artists in one performance evening. NAH DRAN (“close to”) means that there is literally no gap between performers and audience, which offers an intimate setting for sharing the work.

NAH DRAN extended means that the works were selected under a specific curatorial aspect. A spiritual awakening is the starting point of NAH DRAN extended: Deep Calls. We are sensing the need to respond. How can we re-think and re-activate meta/physical tools for re-finding our agency? How can our bodies and our dancing be and perform effectively in order to reconnect with hope and hold space for change? The three pieces offer different perspectives on the relationship between the single body and its sacred capacity for permeability between human and environment, mythology and reality, now and before, now and after.

Michael Kaddu: Underneath climate cracks

How can we reanimate the dying philosopher of African climate alteration?

Which methods do we allow in a time of environmental code brown? Underneath climate cracks is a site-specific dance performance, developed by activist and choreographer Michael Kaddu and funded by “Die Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien im Programm NEUSTART KULTUR, Hilfsprogramm DIS-TANZEN des Dachverband Tanz Deutschland.” to investigate the relevance of rituals in this changing world and the challenges of climate change in an African perspective.

The performer Michael Kaddu takes the audience on a journey through different states of spirituality, along the axis between right and wrong, good and evil. He questions the notion of control and risk in a combination of his own secret body movement, visual arts, poetry and music to create an interdisciplinary performance.

Leah Marojević & Temitope Ajose-Cutting aka N.I.PS (Nuns in Paradise): Wet Dreams

Leah Marojević and Temitope Ajose-Cutting are N.I.PS (Nuns in Paradise). They are interested to employ the mythology of the Siren as a departure point for a dramaturgy that will direct their voices and their bodies. By working with modes of seduction, calling, dominating and devouring, Leah and Temitope will work to develop a singular body that can become a fictitious conduit for transfiguration and haunting.

Paula Bellaguarda: Einsame Bäume: Ein Wald (“Lonely trees: One forest”)

A massive tree is never only silence. The contact with the dead, the loneliness, and the rebirth. Thousands of years of cycles repeat themselves creating a state that can be considered sacred. The need of holding the sky and the urge of holding this space, where spirits can dance and bring life to shape.

Many layers of expression, that overcome each other, bringing us the experience of time and nature, in order to re-connect with the power of nature, and allow the forests to transform those bodies. The forest that is image, the forest that is sound, the forest that is nature and the forests that are humans. Imagining a tree, or many trees, that are allowed to raise their voices to try to avoid the tragedy of dissemination of humankind, by the greed of capitalistic societies.

For this performance a musician creates the sounds from the forest, bringing elements of a diverse musical landscape and build this mythological forest. The performance is a mix of sounds and video and has the body as an instrument to dive in, aiming to create a mythological atmosphere for a forest that includes loneliness and diversity. Reverence, human greed and destruction.
