Kinemathek – Art House Theater

The Vietnamese parents of director Hien Mai have been living in Germany for over 30 years, yet their ideas of home could hardly be more different.

Whilst her father dreams of returning to Vietnam and follows the construction of his house via video call, her mother sees her future in Germany – alongside her first grandchild.

Between Skype calls with family in Vietnam and karaoke evenings in online chat rooms, the film depicts the everyday life of a family living between two countries and differing notions of belonging.

With great intimacy, Hien Mai accompanies her parents and shows how each generation answers the question of ‘home’ differently. Whilst the parents navigate between Germany and Vietnam, the next generation seems to have settled in long ago.
