Estimates run into the tens of thousands. More than 40,000 people have disappeared in the Mediterranean, Alarme Phone Sahara estimates that even more have lost their lives on the way through the Sahara.
Those who have also disappeared without any sign of life are mostly those who are pushed back by Frontex and the national coast guards in the EU, brought back by the coast guards of Libya, Turkey and Tunisia and left in the desert.
In Central America, the disappearance of migrants and refugees is also massive. Worldwide, migration routes are becoming increasingly dangerous, escape routes more difficult. This is increasingly affecting children and young people. The UN Committee against Enforced Disappearances condemned this in September 2023. A report is currently before the Council of Europe for a vote. What can these reports achieve? Can liberalizing visa issuance counteract this?
