An Ost-Rock Legend at the JMB – Part of the Program Accompanying ‘Another Country. Jewish in the GDR’

In 1964, a couple of music enthusiasts met in Meißen, Saxony, to realize their shared dream of standing on stage, making music, and thrilling audiences. This meeting led to the forming of Stern-Combo Meißen, one of the GDR’s most successful bands. Their hits, including Weißes Gold, Der Weite Weg, Was bleibt and Stundenschlag, inspired generations.

Zeder von Jerusalem is based on the family history of founding member and present-day band leader Martin Schreier. His parents, Esther and Israel Schreier, were members of the Belgian resistance, and after the war returned to their native city of Dresden before moving to Meißen.

In an interview forming part of the exhibition Another Country. Jewish in the GDR, Schreier reflects on his family history. On the Glass Courtyard stage, we celebrate the 59th anniversary of his first public performance with the incomparable sounds of Stern-Combo Meißen!
