The series "What Remains" was created in connection with the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and is presented in the exhibition of the same name, which commemorates the events that took place over the past year.
The artworks document the exodus of Ukrainian families and accompany them on their journey through Europe as they search for a new home. In this context of escape, expulsion and new beginnings, Jonathan Benjamin Small brings a personal touch and deals with the story of his great-grandmother. She had to leave the city of Odessa at the end of the 19th century after a Russian pogrom and emigrated to the USA.
The groups of works presented in the exhibition are compared, creating a connection between the past and the present. The photographs show people whose life stories are shaped by violence, war and political events.
These people are faced with the challenge of answering the question “What remains?” to find an individual answer.
