In an apology training session based on inquiries to the Federal Government, interviews with victims, perpetrators*, relatives, activists* and scientists*, children between the ages of 9 and 14 show the audience how to apologize for minor and major crimes, personal misfortunes and global tragedies of the last 99,000 years.
What apologies would be bitterly necessary, what would be inappropriate, and when should wounds never be closed? And above all: how far in history should one actually apologize back? A play about the (in)possibilities of a gesture and the attempt to leave nothing untouched.
HOW TO EXCUSE is a research-based play development that deals with cultural practice, conventions, and a hitherto untold history of apology: with a history of omissions, false gestures, and real feelings. With this work Bastian Sistig and his team face one of the most complicated social challenges and at the same time raise their socio-political treasure.
