Grand Store Opening: SUMO – Archival Fashion Store & Gallery

The collection ranges from rare runway pieces and coveted collector’s items to select vintage couture by renowned designers such as Thierry Mugler, Yves Saint Laurent, and John Galliano. High-quality accessories round out the selection.

The store’s design also follows a curatorial approach. Much like in an art gallery, selected fashion pieces are displayed alongside thematically coordinated photographs.

At the center stands the iconic Le Corbusier LC6 table, where visitors can discover a rotating selection of publications on fashion, photography, and art. The presentation is continuously updated and further developed with each new collection that arrives.

Fashion with a Story

The selection focuses on garments characterized by striking silhouettes, unique constructions, and the unmistakable signature of their designers. The runway serves as a key point of reference. A major focus is on documented runway pieces by Thierry Mugler, Azzedine Alaïa, Yves Saint Laurent, Dior under John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Gucci under Tom Ford, Givenchy, and Jean Paul Gaultier, as well as runway-inspired designs from defining creative phases in these designers’ careers.

Whenever possible, the individual pieces are assigned to their respective seasons and collections. Runway photos, campaigns, editorials, and other historical sources provide additional context and place the objects within their fashion and cultural context. At the same time, the selection remains open to additional pieces that complement SUMO’s curatorial profile.

Boutique and Exhibition Space

The new location is not merely a boutique but also an exhibition space featuring an ongoing program centered on fashion, photography, and art.

To mark its opening, SUMO is presenting the solo exhibition “Going Underground” by Los Angeles-based photographer Leonard Drorian.

The photographer, who works between Berlin and Los Angeles, is showing a selection of analog fashion photographs characterized by a cinematic visual language. His work has been featured by LensCulture and PhotoVogue, among others, and published in magazines such as Schön! and Contributor. Drorian holds a master’s degree in film studies from UCLA and, in addition to commissioned work, dedicates himself to long-term photographic projects.

“SUMO has always operated at the intersection of fashion and art—which is why Charlottenburg feels like the right place for us. On Leibnizstraße, we’re situated between the luxury boutiques around the Ku’damm and the galleries on Mommsenstraße—right in the middle of these two worlds. I believe SUMO brings something new to the neighborhood: a store focused on archival fashion that complements what’s already available while also offering a fresh perspective on vintage and couture,” says founder Alana Richards.
