An experimental film series in eight chapters

For the artist duo Mariola Groener and Günther Wilhelm, joint composition has always been a basic condition of their work. As WILHELM GROENER, they combine space, body, sound, visual means and material to create choreographic-performative textures at the interface of performing and visual arts. Experimental, abstract, poetic as well as receptive changes of perspective are part of the artistic strategy. WILHELM GROENER are currently exploring their complex oeuvre, which has grown over more than two decades, in their long-term project "performing archive".

With the eight-part film experiment FRAMES FRAGMENTS FREQUENCIES, which builds up week by week and was shown online in spring 2022, they had already laid the foundation for the presentation of their multimedia staging of installation, video and performance that can now be experienced at Kunstquartier Bethanien. On the lower of the two levels of Studio 1, the space is dominated by an installation like a neuronal network: eight large-format screens, connected to each other with overlong cable strands and equipped with the experimental film series of the same name, FRAMES FRAGMENTS FREQUENCIES. The possibility of individually and selectively delving into the "frames" of the film material while exploring the space creates a cut through different time levels, an anachronism in which associations simultaneously bring forth the past and the future. The aesthetic-choreographic signature of past performative works by the artist duo becomes perceptible as an echo. The upper level offers visitors a kind of bird's-eye view of the lower field of overlapping information from the media production. This creates ever new frequencies of perception and mood. At the same time, wall-filling collages and sculptural performers, which in turn seem to have sprung from the media works, form additional perspectives and resonances. With the different levels of the overall composition, Mariola Groener and Günther Wilhelm open up a conundrum between real and cinematic presence, irritating and sensitising the audience at the same time. In this way, the physical-medial staging of FRAMES FRAGMENTS FREQUENCIES at Kunstquartier Bethanien becomes a space for reflection on temporality and movement, masquerade and escapism, abstraction and poetic interrogation of reality.
