“My Neighborhood: Stories of Divided Berlin” in Lichtenberg
In the 1980s, numerous people from Vietnam came to the GDR as contract workers; many of them lived and worked in Lichtenberg. After the fall of the GDR, their jobs and residency status were threatened; racist hostility toward them increased.

Following the screenings of the documentaries “Bruderland ist abgebrannt” by Angelika Nguyen and “Sorge 87” by Thanh and Thuy Phuong Nguyen, the filmmakers and eyewitness Chu Tien Tang will speak with journalist Julia Oelkers about the lives of Vietnamese contract workers in the GDR and the period of upheaval in the early 1990s.
The event is being held in cooperation with LAB—the Lichtenberg Center for Civic Participation—and the Berlin Commissioner for Coming to Terms with the SED Dictatorship (BAB), and is part of the BAB event series “My Neighborhood: Stories of Divided Berlin.”
