Elias Wessel (New York) develops photographic concepts that lead to abstract images and convey current social discourses. His cycle of works "It's Complicated" (2019-2021) mirrors the newsfeed of social networks and condenses what we otherwise perceive as a sequence: The seemingly equal presence of each statement, selected by an invisible algorithm. With the accompanying audio work "Ist möglichweise Kunst" and the "Textfetzen" (Kulturverlag Kadmos), available in book form, the images take the path back from the digital to the analog. Together with works from the series "The Sum of My Data" (2017), "Images Through an Algorithmic Lens" (2018-2019), and "Brave New World" (2020-2021), the Freundeskreis Willy-Brandt-Haus presents an extensive spectrum of Wessel's photographs for the next society.
