James Tyrone, once a successful actor, cannot forget his miserable youth and tyrannizes the family with his avarice, from which a son has already perished. The awareness of this guilt drives Tyrone's wife into morphine addiction. The son James becomes a drunkard and cynic; his younger brother Edmund suffers from consumption, which is trivialized as summer flu.

The hopelessness of their fate drives these four people into mutual torment, accusation, forgiveness, and the brutal speaking out of truths that had to hide behind life lies for decades.
