Divanhana from Sarajevo
present traditional Balkan music in a new guise: urban styles combine
with the rich sounds of Sevdah. With great dedication, the
musicians convey this musical heritage between painful melancholy and
heartfelt joy – in powerful, contemporary arrangements. Their melodies
merge into an energetic mélange of jazz, folk, modern classical
and pop, without ever losing their emotional depth.
Sevdah (also Sevdalinka) is a traditional music genre from Bosnia and Herzegovina, characterised by emotional depth, poetic
lyrics and an often melancholic sound. It is one of the most important
forms of musical expression in the Balkans – and is considered a cultural
heritage there.
The band's sixth studio album, Zavrzlama,
was released in 2022 and combines Sephardic, Balkan and Turkish
roots with jazzy pop lightness.
Since 2022, singer Selma Doce has also been part of the line-up,
who will of course also be performing live at the Kesselhaus. In recent
years, the band has also released a ‘Quarantine EP’ and made a
making-of documentary film about the recordings in the studio in Ljubljana.
