The most sustainable device is the one that is already there. In this free workshop with Joseph deVeaugh-Geiss (KDE), we will explain how free, open source software can be used to give old laptops a new lease of life, save money and reduce toxic electronic waste.
Just bring your curiosity and questions - or a laptop that you want to upcycle with GNU/Linux. The workshop is beginner-friendly, no technical knowledge is required.
It begins with a meet & greet and a discussion session to explore how free software can support literary institutions and the free literary scene, how everyone can work together to promote digital self-determination and help the environment.
Then we move on to the practical part: Older Macs or PCs that are no longer supported by the manufacturers can be upgraded with the Linux operating system so that they continue to work for many years to come. Those interested are welcome to just watch, or get started right away with guidance.
Don't worry - you don't have to completely change everything right away, but you can, for example, change the operating system. For example, with a “dual boot” both operating systems can be used temporarily.
IMPORTANT: Back up all existing data on the device that is to be upcycled beforehand - before the event on an external storage medium or in the cloud.
If you would like to take part in the practical workshop, please register in advance by email to magda.birkmann[at]lettretage.de to clarify some technical questions. Spontaneous participation is also possible.
