Marzahn—for many, a synonym for a troubled neighborhood, social decline, and social invisibility. Yet what was once the largest prefabricated housing estate in the GDR and a prestigious socialist project is so much more than its reputation in the media.

In her “middle years,” author Katja Oskamp decides to start over here: she becomes a pedicurist. At work, she listens to the people who come to her and begins to write down their stories—stories full of strength, wit, and warmth.

Christiane Paul, an East Berlin native and actress known from film and television, brings Katja Oskamp’s Berlin novel to the big stage in a reading—and in doing so, captures the image everyone has of Marzahn, on its head.
