The Catalonian artist David Espinosa has already been a guest at Schaubude Berlin multiple times. In his newest work, with which he will open this year’s edition of the Theater der Dinge festival, he creates a composition of shadows: a stage comic book that reflects upon the cultural images and ideas about a death in a way that is poetically cryptic and visually surprising.
“We didn’t want to make a piece about shadows, but instead a shadow of a piece. A piece about death. About a shadow that is dying. Of course, we did not want to speak directly about topics such as mourning, pain, suicide, the loss of a child, broken hearts, the passing of time, decadence, the apocalypse, hell, life after death, reincarnation, the soul or religion. Instead, we imagined the piece to be like a large vanitas motif that reminds us of the fleeting nature of all existence through symbolic objects, light and shadows. This is an ironic and formal performance that speaks to the subconscious in a playful way. It is a little macabre, a little bit absurd; it is a walk through the gloom. A dark street. The shadow street.”
