Nostalgia as a tool for desirable futures
Was everything better in the past—or was it? Nostalgia is a powerful emotion: it can connect us, comfort us, and offer hope, but it can also cloud our vision of the future. In times of change, we experience it everywhere—in politics, pop culture, and personal memories. But what happens when people use nostalgia not as a refuge, but as a resource for shaping the future?
You will experiment with memories, images, and feelings from the past—and explore how they influence your visions of tomorrow.
In a playful and speculative way, you will investigate how nostalgic images are created, what they do to our imagination, and how they can be translated into new visions of the future.
Together, you will try out different approaches, develop initial prototypes, and test how nostalgia can help make desirable futures more tangible—without falling into simplistic "everything was better in the past" narratives. This workshop is a pilot format of Futures Probes and invites you to think along, participate, and imagine together.
