No modernist movement is without reactionary headwinds: the Berlin Secession found itself confronted with chauvinistic slogans and anti-Semitic agitation due to its transnational stance.
But despite conservative opposition and nationalist agitation, it organised highly acclaimed international exhibitions, championed young, socially critical art and promoted free artistic thinking. With its cosmopolitan attitude, it contradicted the idea of German nationalism.
Some aspects that inevitably recall current political controversies will be highlighted in the tour.
