The importance of the Middle Ages for shaping Europe's identity was recently demonstrated again at the solemn consecration of the restored Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. This lecture series will introduce the Gothic era in architecture and painting.
The idea of placing large paintings behind the altars to decorate churches was a consequence of the Lateran Council of 1215. Two saints frequently appear in works in the Gemäldegalerie: Francis of Assisi and Elizabeth of Thuringia. As prominent figures of this period, they provide insight into the era.
