Anniversary event on October 21, 2023 in the Zeiss Large Planetarium

A very special anniversary is being celebrated: the planetarium is 100 years old! Ten decades in which the projection planetarium takes the stars from the sky and takes its audience into the vastness of the cosmos.

On October 21, 1923, the first projection planetarium was presented to the public at the German Museum in Munich.
The Carl Zeiss Jena company, led by Walther Bauerfeld, had developed the first star projector and the construction of the cantilever dome in previous years. After further adjustments to the projector, the world's first planetarium in Munich began regular operations on May 7, 1925.

With its impressively natural representation of the nighttime firmament, the projection planetarium is one of the great engineering masterpieces of the 20th century. While the classic projection planetarium was limited to the representation of phenomena as seen from the solar system, today's digital video projection (fulldome) allows the free choice of place and time in the cosmos.

Celebrate this milestone with us in the most visited planetarium in German-speaking countries! On Saturday, October 21st, a cosmic day awaits you in the Zeiss Large Planetarium with free admission.

The following anniversary program awaits you:

11:15 a.m.: Armstrong – a mouse’s adventurous journey to the moon

12:30 p.m.: Spaceship Earth
