Solidarity run for suicide prevention
On Saturday, 10 May 2025, the international event ‘Darkness Into Light’ will take place for the second time at Tempelhofer Feld in Berlin. The run at dawn is part of a worldwide initiative for suicide prevention and stands for hope, solidarity and a visible sign against the taboo of suicide.
Worldwide, hundreds of thousands of people in over 150 cities take part in ‘Darkness Into Light’ every year.
The symbolic 5-kilometre walk begins before sunrise at 4:15 am. The route leads from the darkness of night into the light of the new day – as a sign for the way out of despair towards support, help and life. Participants thus send a public signal of solidarity with people in suicidal crises, for their relatives and for all those who work for prevention and education.
The Berlin event is organised by Telefonseelsorge Berlin e.V. in cooperation with the Irish organisation Pieta House, which created the format.
Use of proceeds:
- 50% of the proceeds go to Telefonseelsorge Berlin e.V., in particular to the BeSu Berlin project – counselling for relatives affected by suicide – and the 24/7 counselling hotline.
- 50% goes to Pieta House, which supports people with suicidal crises and self-harming behaviour worldwide.
- 100% of additional donations remain with the Berlin Telephone Counselling Service.
