Special exhibition in the James-Simon-Galerie
This special exhibition at the James-Simon-Galerie and Neues Museum is dedicated to Germany‘s most famous archaeologist, Heinrich Schliemann (1822-1890).
With approximately 700 objects - including numerous international loans - the special exhibition deals with the both dazzling and controversial personality in two parts: While the first part in the James-Simon-Galerie sheds light on his biography, the second part of the exhibition in the Neues Museum presents his impressive discoveries of the royal tombs in Mycenae and Schliemann's Trojan Collection.

Retrospective of his life and work
Born in 1822 and raised in impoverished living conditions, Schliemann decided to emigrate to America at the age of 19, from where he gained considerable wealth both as a businessman and in the wake of the gold rush. In the mid-1850s, Schliemann embarks on several journeys through Europe, the Orient, India, China and Japan.
With a keen interest in science, Schliemann begins a career as an archaeologist. In 1873 he finds the legendary "Treasure of Priamos", named after the mythical king of Troy. His "Collection of Trojan Antiquities" comprises about 10,000 objects, including famous gold finds, ceramic vessels, metal utensils, and various other small finds.
In addition to his discoveries, the exhibition also critically examines his self-promoted image as a hero and visionary.
