What begins as a role-playing game escalates into a bizarre ballet of obedience, moral transgression, and revolt against Madame—the woman who employs them and, at the same time, dominates them.
Based on the idea of understanding dance as one of humanity’s oldest ritual forms of expression, the production translates Genet’s grotesquely exaggerated linguistic artistry into classical ballet, contemporary floorwork, and music that oscillates between Baroque soundscapes and hard club techno. The production makes the internalization of patriarchal power structures visible. It draws attention to the danger that, within capitalist and patriarchal systems, women do not break free from existing power structures but merely assume the positions of those in power.
The performance license for ŽabaTeatar to stage Jean Genet’s *The Maids* was granted by Rosica Colin Limited, London.
