Maaya
A new urban oasis for the capital
The sun glistens on the turquoise blue water, Afrobeats vibrate through the air and the smell of deliciously spiced dishes wafts from the market square. Since July 2024, the African DJ collective Freak de l'Afrique has been playing at the popular open-air location with pool (formerly Haubentaucher) - and invites you to enjoy balmy summer nights and cultural exchange in the centre of the RAW site in Friedrichshain. With lively parties, exhibitions, performances, culinary delights and a broad cultural programme, Maaya has established itself as a new African cultural hotspot in Berlin.
The new name says it all: Maaya is a term from Pan-Africanism, i.e. the community of all people with African roots worldwide, and stands for solidarity and cohesion. And this is exactly what the new Maaya celebrates. There is a gallery, a marketplace, a beer garden, reggaaeton workshops, performances and, of course, more great parties.
Holiday feeling in the urban jungle
Enjoy a holiday feeling in the middle of the urban jungle. The urban location offers its guests an oasis with a large outdoor pool between old industrial plants. Sun loungers invite you to relax, while cocktails can be sipped or parties celebrated at the bar in the rest of the grounds and inside the building. There is no real clubbing, but Maaya is the perfect place to get started in Berlin's nightlife.
Cultural relevance today
Maaya responds to the need for identity, expression and encounters in a city that is constantly redefining itself. For Berliners with and without African roots, MAAYA opens up spaces that are often marginalised: The stage for music genres from the Global South, art exhibitions, markets with products of African and Afro-diasporic origin, workshops and performances. At the same time, the venue is attractive to visitors from all over the world who want to experience Berlin not just as a tourist metropolis, but as a vibrant, diverse city of culture.
Highlights of Maaya Berlin
- Visual & digital art, exhibitions, performances and DJ sets await you in the Maaya Gallery.
- At the Maaya Market in the Backyard, you will find all kinds of goods, fashion and culinary delights from African and Afro-diasporic traditions.
- Music is central: parties, live acts and workshops (e.g. reggaeton, Afrobeat, Amapiano) characterise the programme.
- The name "Maaya" refers to pan-African awareness, cohesion and diversity. A symbol that guides the cultural project.
All about MAAYA
Maaya (formerly Haubentaucher) is located directly on the RAW site: the site itself is a cultural space with street art, alternative projects, clubs, food spots and sports facilities, such as the climbing cone or the large skate hall. The flea market on Sundays is also worth a visit.
