The journey to Berlin Modernism

World-renowned architects such as Walter Gropius, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee and Oskar Schlemmer taught at the Bauhaus. The famous state university was the most important educational institution of the 20th century for architecture, art and design in Germany and continues to provide important inspiration and impulses for contemporary issues. The ideas and work of those who taught and studied at the Bauhaus had a fundamental influence on the works of Classical Modernism and are today classified under a wide variety of styles, whether Functionalism, New Objectivity or Modern Building.

The architecture and design of early 20th century modernism is present in numerous places in the German capital. See the world's largest collection on the history of the Bauhaus at the Berlin Bauhaus Archive, and complement your experience with guided tours, exhibitions and one of the many events.

The Triennale der Moderne, the festival on ideas and building culture of the modernism, regularly takes place in Berlin, Weimar and Dessau. Workshops, exhibitions, guided tours and walks are offered as part of the festival programme.
