The neighbourhood around Oranienstraße in Kreuzberg is legendary and used to be one of Berlin's wildest party districts. Many people are still familiar with the term Kreuzberg 36: it is made up of the district of Kreuzberg and the old postcode 36 for the area between Kottbusser and Schlesisches Tor.
Oranienstraße - Kreuzberg's vibrant nightlife district
Oranienstraße is vibrant and epitomises the diversity and lifestyle of the district like no other. Back in the 1970s, it was home to artists, political activists and the alternative scene. Today, the area between Moritzplatz, Kottbusser Tor and Görlitzer Bahnhof is a lively mix of bars, clubs, restaurants and cultural venues - a true Kreuzberg original that combines tradition and modernity. Small restaurants with international cuisine, designer shops, late-night bars, pubs, bars - everything is lined up close together here. The narrow pavements are full of tables, chairs, benches and people.
Bars, pubs & places of worship
Traditional Berlin pubs, international restaurants and trendy bars are lined up along Oranienstraße. If you fancy beer and live music, you should visit SO36 - a legendary club that has been an integral part of Berlin's concert and party scene for decades. Just a few steps away are popular meeting places such as the Coretex Café (with its own record shop) or the Maxim Bar, which serves cocktails late into the night. Pubs such as the Würgeengel from the 70s to 90s are still very popular today, as are newer bars such as Prinzipal Kreuzberg or Bar39. The neighbourhood around Oranienstraße is also home to a handful of Berlin's best-known clubs. The Prince Charles and Ritter Butzke are located directly on Moritzplatz.
Culinary diversity & street life
Whether Turkish specialities, Mexican tacos or vegan burgers - Oranienstraße is as colourful in culinary terms as its clientele. Many restaurants are open late into the night, making the street an ideal place for a culinary discovery tour. In summer, guests sit outside, the atmosphere is exuberant and the street becomes a stage for typical Kreuzberg street life.
