Atlanta, in the south of the USA: A father, Afzal, and two grown-up daughters. The widowed patriarch and native Pakistani has worked his way up from being a taxi driver to being a successful taxi operator. A rather liberal Muslim, but with very stable views, who takes loving care of his daughters.
He is even secretly looking for a husband for the older one, Zarina, a talented writer: Without her knowledge, he places a personal ad on muslimlove.com and then personally tests the candidates thoroughly - and, above all, for their faith. Eli, a young convert, initially seems to satisfy both father and daughter. He marries Zarina.
But when Afzal gets his hands on his daughter's current manuscript, a book about the prophet Mohammed as a human being, in which Zarina reflects on her personal relationship to love, marriage and religious worldview, there is a scandal. The strong emotional bonds within this small family are put to the test, in which only ruthless honesty and open devotion can find a way out, between tradition and enlightened worldview, faith and reason, love and detachment.
