Gabor Maté in Conversation with the Aid and Human Rights Organisation medico international
His work is partly shaped by his own life story: as a child, he survived the Holocaust. Maté has dedicated his life to understanding human suffering and helping others as an act of human solidarity.
He believes that the tragic triangular relationship between German, Jewish, and Palestinian interactions—even though it is strongly shaped by the traumatic histories of all three peoples—is deeply rooted in power politics that distort narratives and lead to narrow perspectives.
As a result, the root causes are not addressed. At HAU Hebbel am Ufer, Gabor Maté—a former leader in the Zionist youth movement—will speak about his visits to Gaza and the West Bank, including his work in trauma therapy in the West Bank in 2022.
A discussion will follow. Gabor Maté’s lecture series will be moderated by Julia Manek and Riad Othman. Julia Manek, a clinical psychologist and human geographer, has been working as a psychosocial work consultant for medico international since 2021. Riad Othman, a historian with additional training in humanitarian aid, has been working for medico since 2012, including periods in Palestine and Israel.
