Jason Kunwar
For this year’s edition of Middle Ground, Jason Kunwar draws on Sangini, a Nepalese vocal tradition performed by women who sing together at festivals and community gatherings.

Using field recordings and live instrumental accompaniment, he revisits songs from this age-old oral tradition in the eastern hill country of Nepal, in which women have expressed their experiences of isolation, their longings and the hardships of married life.
Rather than reconstructing a single, definitive version of Sangini, Kunwar works with songs, memories and fragments of a tradition that is often kept alive today by the village elders. The performance brings the voices of mothers, sisters, grandmothers and daughters into the present day and explores a history in which women’s suffering was so deeply woven into society that it became the norm. It also highlights how the echoes of these experiences can still be felt today.
