DTSG e. V.

At the beginning of the 20th century, a new type of woman emerged: she worked, mostly as a company employee. Three of the six important partners in Kafka's life were among them. Felice Bauer and Grete Bloch were authorized signatories, Julie Wohryzek was an office worker.

SIX WOMEN OF FRANZ KAFKA/ ŠEST ŽEN FRANZE KAFKY

The other three: Hedwig Weiler, a doctor of German studies, Dora Diamant, later an actress, and Milena Jesenská-Polak, a journalist. All of them embodied the dawn of modernity. They belonged to different nationalities: Czech, German, and German-Jewish, respectively.

Viewed as personalities, they represent an arc, a logical development in the course of Kafka's life. When something—typically the red tape—seems entirely insoluble, Praguers call it "Kafkárna (= Kafkarei)." Kafka's relationship with the women is also a Kafkárna, a labyrinth of approaches and fears (the most important of which is whether he would be able to continue writing while living with them).

The bilingual production draws on the extensive correspondence as well as the accounts of the women and Max Brod. It will be shown in Prague and Berlin.

The six women are portrayed in the bilingual production by the Czech actresses Jana Podlesná and Ivana Uhlířová, and Kafka by Daniel-František Kamen, an actor of Czech descent who was born and raised in Germany.
