The string trio Trio d’Iroise from Hanover, together with three musicians from the Syrian ensemble Syriab, took a closer look at the Goldberg Variations. They have found interesting parallels between European Baroque music and Arabic traditional music and last year began to reinterpret the Goldberg Variations and bring together the cultural roots of both ensembles.
The result is a dance-like, partly improvisational Bach, enhanced by Arabic melodies, harmonies and lively rhythms, but all without going too close to Bach's magnum opus. The album was released in November.
