Jiyoung Yoon

The installation *There was a time when, not knowing how to live, I took out my entrails to make a net* by Jiyoung Yoon takes the form of an expansive net of interwoven silicone entrails.

Rather than remaining inside individuals, the entrails extend outwards. They capture bodies and weave them into a shared network. The artwork was created during a time of profound loss and a broken heart. Its title is taken from an as yet unpublished essay by Yoon, which explores how people can communicate and connect with one another through painful experiences. In this shared vulnerability, the work finds the possibility of solidarity.

At the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, the web of entrails lies horizontally on the floor, inviting the audience to step inside, lean in close and become intertwined with the work. Throughout the evening, the audience will be asked questions on themes of protection, solidarity and fear. The collected answers are tattooed directly onto the artwork as the evening progresses – a record of shared experiences of loneliness and solidarity, made visible through the audience’s contributions.
