Every spring, the Schöneweide depot opens its doors and invites visitors to take a look behind the scenes of Berlin macht Dampf (Berlin Makes Steam). Here, visitors can experience numerous locomotives and carriages from over a century of railway history up close.
A special highlight is the cab ride, where guests can look over the shoulder of a train driver and gain fascinating insights into railway operations.
The historic dining car and a beer garden with a grill and goulash cannon provide refreshments. Nostalgic city tours by steam train also depart directly from the festival grounds.
Hands-on Railways
Interested visitors can even take the driver's seat and inspect locomotive boilers or the huge engines of modern locomotives. Those who prefer to watch can take a ride in the cab of a diesel or steam locomotive.
During a tour of the large engine shed, visitors learn all about the locomotive workshop from their grandfather's time. Currently, the museum is showcasing the restoration of a 1937 express train carriage and the repair of a steam locomotive that hasn't been running for over thirty years.
A narrow-gauge railway runs through the grounds for children, and the bouncy castle invites them to let off steam. In the historic dining car and in front of it, you'll find home-cooked meals and delicious grilled food and goulash.
Open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
