With Caroline Siebert as SOLO SUNNY & Johannes Kirchberg at the piano
When Konrad Wolf and Wolfgang Kohlhaase's SOLO SUNNY won the Silver Bear at the Berlinale in 1980, the film was on everyone's lips, and not just among East Germans. Today, the story of the protagonist Sunny - a self-confident singer who goes her own way against all external adversities and fights for herself, her art and her love - is one of the most famous works in German film history.
End of the 70s: Sunny tours the villages of East Germany with her band, the "Tornados", and performs in cultural centers and dance halls. In the eyes of others, she has "made it". The reality on the stages of the provincial towns looks rather bleak: nightly beer-loving, old stuff, dusty hit songs and the same old show numbers.
Sunny dreams of more and says: "You have to have personality even if you're not famous, don't you?" She tries out new music and a new man. Ralph is a philosopher, a hobby musician and Sunny is totally in love with him. But the strong-willed Sunny is too much for the unfaithful Ralph and her journey with the "Tornados" also ends. Sunny's dreams crumble like the facades of the Prenzlauer Berg back houses in which Konrad Wolf sets his film. She falls. And picks herself up again shortly afterwards...
The "cult" film SOLO SUNNY is coming to the stage in the Theater Ost in a version and production by Judith Zieprig in a new guise and with lots of new old (East) music. Sunny is a merciless lover and a highly topical, ambitious and self-confident female character. Her dreams, fears, worries and needs are those of a modern artist who is not prepared to give up without a fight. What kind of "corner peeers" would Sunny have to deal with today?
Director Judith Zieprig, actress Caroline Siebert and musician and actor Johannes Kirchberg want to reconstruct the story and approach the character in a careful way. In close collaboration with film composer Günther Fischer, they are also looking for a contemporary “sound” for Sunny.
The production is also celebrating Günther Fischer’s 80th birthday this year and is delighted to welcome him as a guest at the premiere. Don’t miss out on this special theater experience and the “new Sunny”.
