In the current media landscape, people are educated by technology to ascribe personal and supposedly authentic meaning to every action that is actionable and commercially exploitable - people create profiles in which they post their social lives on Instagram, which is represented in images and links online, while the data is extracted and monetized from the same corporate platforms where it all happens.

On the one hand, the creation of profiles, alternative avatars, and the fabrication or embellishment of identity online is normalized, while on the other hand, the politicization of identity and its subsequent exploitation is at the center of cultural debates in Western society.

On the part of both authors and viewers, the creation of profile is a central process and motif of contemporary social relations. Even as people believe they have control over social media profiling to represent themselves online, processes such as consumer or police profiling construct representations of them based on technological perceptions of our behavior. This polarity between author*s and viewers continues in the way people approach artworks and how artists today think about how the meaning of their work is constructed.

Featuring works by Aisha Altenhofen & Felix Ansmann, Friederike Goebbels, Tara Habibzadeh, Samuel Haitz, Dana Rabea Jäger, Koob-Sassen Company, Jonas Kuck & Lukas Zerrahn, Katharina Michalsky, and Miriam Wierzchoslawska.
