Sandra Mujinga won the National Gallery 2021 Prize in October 2021, which is associated with an exhibition and an accompanying publication. The artist is therefore currently showing her new video installation, entitled "I Build My Skin With Rocks," in the Historische Halle of Hamburger Bahnhof - Museum für Gegenwart - Berlin.
At the center of her work is a fantastical hybrid being, informed by Mujinga's interest in the principle of worldbuilding in the science fiction genre, as well as her research into animal survival strategies. These strategies include both physical mutations and altered behaviors designed to protect against the increasingly threatening presence of humans in their habitat.
The exhibition is made possible by the Friends of the National Gallery of Art and sponsored by BMW.
