European identity in transition: Dramatic reflections in times of conflict
With this unique Director and Dramaturgy Laboratory, Urban Theater e.V. explores artistic, historical and contemporary reflections in the context of the Russian-Ukrainian war.
The theatre lab is primarily aimed at German and Eastern European playwrights and directors and consists of four phases: a dramaturgy and directing competition, an acting casting as well as rehearsals and performances of the production designs.
Sammelpunkt is intended to revive cultural dialogue in polarising times and provide a platform for artists who are all part of the conflict in one way or another. This opens up a creative space for in-depth artistic dialogue on the current challenges in Europe and for communicating its democratic values.
An experienced jury headed by Natalia Lapina (artistic director of Urban Theater e.V.) will select the most innovative works created since February 2022 for realisation. Seven drafts by contemporary Eastern European playwrights will be staged as part of the nine-day theatre lab in collaboration with actors and other theatre professionals from Germany and Eastern Europe.
The results will be presented to the public in the format ‘Work In Progress’ on 22 and 23 February 2025 at Theater Strahl (Berlin).
There will be public events such as an ‘Open Talk’ in the run-up to the event, with more information to follow shortly.
Sammelpunkt will be moderated throughout by curators (jurors) such as Belgian theatre director Luc Perceval and theatre maker Birgit Lengers and accompanied by renowned European theatre makers in the form of workshops and public lectures.
The Urban Theatre, which was founded in 2023 as an independent ensemble in Berlin and is made up of theatre makers from Eastern Europe, cooperates with the St. Petersburg City Theatre, one of the best non-governmental and independent theatres, and the Teatr Brama, an independent multicultural theatre in Goleniów, Poland.
Artistic Director: Natalia Lapina has brought over 50 productions to the stage in Russia, Estonia, Poland and the USA. She has participated in the New York Lincoln Center Director's Lab and Chicago Director's Lab and has led numerous Director's Labs.
Curators and jury: Natalia Skorokhod (playwright, former St. Petersburg School of Drama), Vitalij Schmidt (commercial director of Urban Theater e.V.), Luc Perceval (director, Belgium), Birgit Lengers (theatre maker, Germany), Daniel Jacewicz (director, Poland), Johannes Kirsten (dramaturge, Germany).
Sammelpunkt is sponsored by the Federal Foreign Office.
The dramaturgy competition has already been completed. 10 works by dramaturgs from Ukraine, Russia, Germany, Belarus, Poland, Estonia, Lithuania and Montenegro have been selected for the time being.
