At the centre of the exhibition by the artist Saâdane Afif (born 1970) is the multi-part work “The Fountain Archives” (2008-2022), which was donated to the Nationalgalerie in 2023 and will be presented to the public for the first time in the Hamburger Bahnhof.
In the form of an artistic archive project, Afif has traced the reception history of Marcel Duchamp's legendary readymade “Fountain” from 1917.
The exhibition shows this work, dedicated to a prominent chapter in the history of 20th century art, together with other works by the artist that question the institution of the art museum in depth and with subtle humor.
