Ariel Efraim Ashbel and friends
Passover is one of the most important holidays in the Jewish calendar and is also called the festival of spring. This Jewish holiday celebrates coming out after the winter: the leaving of the indoors after winter, the warm weather, the blossoming of the trees and the regeneration of the earth, the cleaning of the houses and the getting rid of the old in favor of the new.
Rituals recall the Exodus, the Israelites’ escape from slavery towards freedom – and thus the origin story of the Jewish people. On the occasion of the holiday, the artists Ariel Efraim Ashbel and Rachel Libeskind invite the public to take a walk from the Jewish Museum to HAU2, reflecting on the cultural significance of spring. After “The Names /שמות” and “Rites of Spring I: PURIMSPIEL”, “Rites of Spring II: Passing over and the dialectics of Departure” is another production in the frame of the programme cycle to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Ariel Ashbel and friends.
The year 2023 marks 10 years since Ariel Efraim Ashbel and friends first showed their work in Germany with “All white people look the same to me” – and this anniversary will be celebrated with several upcoming occasions at HAU, highlighting the potential of articulating contemporary performance through the lens of Jewish tradition.
