Few poets have left such a visible mark on 20th and 21st century music as Rainer Maria Rilke (1875–1926), one of the most important representatives of literary modernism. It is little known that he also wrote numerous poems in French.
In its concert marking the 150th anniversary of Rilke's birth, the BERLINER CAPPELLA takes up this multilingualism and presents a selection of the more than 1,000 settings of his poems that exist worldwide, which in their musical and stylistic range also reflect the time of their creation. The programme includes late Romanticism (Alban Berg, Alma Mahler, Franz Schreker) and Neoclassicism (Paul Hindemith), jazz sounds (Leonard Bernstein, Lidia Kalendareva) and modern to contemporary compositions (Markus Fritz, Harald Heilmann, Morten Lauridsen, Cyrill Schürch).
Alternating between choir, solo singing and readings, the poems and their musical settings tell of experiences of nature, of desires for love and of music. In doing so, they convey both the joy of life and its transience.
