“Resurrect In Peace (R.I.P.)” is a funeral for a species of bird. The passenger pigeon was wiped out more than a hundred years ago, and now it receives a farewell with a high-tech ritual at HAU3. “R.I.P.” deals with the relationship between human and non-human animals.
In the midst of the first species extinction caused by humans, “R.I.P.” celebrates the mortality of all existence and questions the political potential of a possible resurrection. “R.I.P.” is a ceremonial admission of guilt, a speculative immersion, a lament in computer graphics. The background to Anan Fries’ new production, once again made in collaboration with Malu Peeters, is a current attempt in the USA to bring the passenger pigeon back to life in the laboratory. At HAU3, three performers become the masters of ceremonies for a requiem through use of motion capture, a process in which physical movement is converted into digital data.
