He is one of the worst mass murderers in history, but in the GDR he was worshipped as the "greatest genius of our era":

Soviet party and government leader Josef Stalin. The special exhibition at the Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial is dedicated for the first time to the cult of the Soviet dictator in the early GDR. Mass marches, Stalin monuments and larger-than-life portraits of the dictator on the walls of the house formed the instruments of a centrally orchestrated propaganda. Industrial plants, numerous streets and an entire town bore Stalin's name. Berlin's centre was to be demolished in favor of Stalinist splendour buildings and assembly areas. The exhibition presents a wealth of rare objects, films and photographs of Stalin's cult - from the hand of the famous Stalin statue in Budapest, through large-scale projections of agitation films to fake photos in which the victims of "Great Terror" were retouched. The propaganda is opposed to the brutal violence that was symbolically expressed in the Berlin-Hohenschönhausen prison.
