Rattleskin by DANCÆ

DANCÆ, in their largest production yet, will take over a 2000m² department store with Rattleskin, a performance combining neo-classical ballet, contemporary dance, and electronic music. On October 9-10 and October 15-18, DANCÆ will present Rattleskin at CANK, on Karl-Marx-Straße in Neukolln.

The production sees an abandoned C&A department store shed its skin and transform into a cultural hub, with spatialized video, new media, choreography and sound. The architecture of the building becomes an integral part of the work, with different environments unfolding across the space and gradually revealing themselves to the audience.

Featuring music by Alarico, Ogtrues, Innox Trax, Temudo, and more, Rattleskin sets out to deconstruct desire, happiness, and the endless promise of bettering ourselves.

The work asks what happens to the self in a culture increasingly shaped by ideals of self-optimization and improvement. We are encouraged to know ourselves, heal ourselves and become more fully ourselves, while at the same time being confronted with an endless number of ways in which we might be better, happier, more desirable or more complete. At what point does the search for the self become another way of escaping it?
